Strength and hardness. More carbon, harder to form.
Manganese
Strength and hardenability; ties up sulphur.
Silicon
Deoxidiser; small strength gain.
Chromium
Hardenability, wear resistance, carbides.
Molybdenum
Deep hardening and toughness; resists temper brittleness.
Sulphur
Kept low for heading; added on purpose for free cutting.
Phosphorus
Impurity — kept low for toughness.
Boron
Parts-per-million additions boost hardenability.
